Saona Island is one of the most fascinating areas of the Dominican Republic. It is located in the southern part of the island and is famous for the beauty of its beaches. It is separated from the mainland by the Catuano channel. Saona Island can only be reached by boat: its beaches are protected and are part of the Est National Park (opened in the 70s), one of the most important nature reserves and fascinating area of Central America. Saona Island is considered a very important step in the discovery of the Dominican Republic. Its territory is mostly flat and is characterized by the presence of luxuriant vegetation. The population of the Saona Island is composed mainly of fishermen, who live mostly in the small village of Mano Juan. Another small urban area on the island is Punta Catuano, characterized by a greater tourism with some little souvenirs’ shops.
